Ogawa Rope: Traditional Japanese Rope for Shibari

The Ogawa rope is a Japanese jute Shibari rope, known for its flexibility, raw texture and strong responsiveness under tension.

Made in Japan by Ogawa, it is one of the most well-known ropes in the world of traditional Shibari and Japanese Kinbaku.

This 6 mm / 8 m Shibari rope is especially suited for practitioners looking for an authentic rope, smooth in hand, with a natural feel and a strong presence during practice.

Why choose an Ogawa rope for Shibari?

The Ogawa rope is appreciated for its very specific behaviour. It is soft, lively, quick to handle and pleasant for fluid tying.

Its more open twist gives it a different feel compared to tighter ropes. It moves smoothly in the hand, settles easily and allows precise work for floor ties as well as more advanced practices.

It is particularly suitable for people already familiar with Japanese bondage, who know how to handle a soft rope with care.

Technical specifications of the Ogawa rope

  • Type: Japanese Shibari rope
  • Material: industrial Japanese jute
  • Brand: Ogawa, Japan
  • Diameter: 6 mm
  • Length: 8 metres
  • Structure: 3 strands
  • Treatment: contains JBO
  • Preparation: rubbed, singed and waxed

A ready-to-use rope

Each Ogawa 6 mm rope is prepared before shipping. It is cleaned, rubbed and singed so it can be used quickly after delivery.

This preparation makes the rope more pleasant in the hand, reduces loose fibres and gives a better feel from the first uses.

About JBO

The Ogawa rope contains JBO, used in the treatment of industrial Japanese jute.

This treatment gives the rope a distinctive smell, often associated with traditional Japanese ropes. This smell is reduced by our preparation and gradually fades with time and use.

Important: humidity may temporarily make this smell stronger.

Usage advice

The Ogawa rope requires clean and careful handling. Its soft twist offers great fluidity, but also makes it more sensitive to poor handling.

Avoid pushing the rope with your fingers or pulling only part of the rope on a single strand. To preserve its lifespan, always guide the rope in the direction of its structure.

This rope is recommended for practitioners already familiar with the basics of Shibari and the safety rules related to rope tying.

Quick comparison of Shibari ropes

  • Ogawa: traditional Japanese rope, very soft, contains JBO.
  • SK Nature: Japanese rope, JBO-free, flexible, versatile and more resistant.
  • SK Colour: SK Nature rope with professional dyeing, ideal for a strong visual result.
  • Silky hemp: natural rope, soft, pleasant and requires no specific maintenance.

Summary

The Ogawa Shibari Rope 6 mm / 8 m is a Japanese jute rope, soft, traditional and ready to use. It offers an authentic feel, close to the spirit of Japanese Kinbaku, and is designed for practitioners looking for a smooth, lively and responsive rope.
