Seb Kinbaku is a Shibari and Kinbaku instructor and artist, recognized in France and internationally. He teaches a respectful, precise practice centered on connection.

A Master Practitioner in NLP, he integrates communication, trust, and body awareness at the heart of his teaching approach.

Origins of Shibari & Kinbaku

Shibari finds its roots in Hojo-jutsu, a Japanese martial art used during the feudal era for restraining and controlling prisoners. These techniques relied on precise knowledge of ropes, the human body, and tension management, serving both functional and symbolic purposes.

At the beginning of the 20th century, as traditional military uses gradually disappeared, these techniques were at risk of being lost. During this period, Ito Seiu (1882–1961), a Japanese painter and illustrator, played a decisive role. Considered the father of modern Kinbaku, he studied, documented, and preserved ancient tying methods, transforming them into an artistic form of expression. Under his influence, the rope ceased to be merely a tool of restraint and became a visual and emotional language.

In the 1950s–1960s, the term Kinbaku, meaning “to bind tightly,” became established to describe a practice focused on aesthetics, emotion, and the relationship between partners. Shibari evolved into a full-fledged art, carried by photography, illustration, and performance, where the beauty of forms, line tension, and bodily presence play a central role.

From the late 20th century onward, Shibari spread widely beyond Japan. It became a living art, transmitted and reinterpreted around the world. Contemporary practices now integrate essential notions of safety, consent, communication, and connection, while respecting the historical and aesthetic foundations of the art.

Today, Shibari and Kinbaku continue to evolve, carried by artists and instructors who perpetuate this tradition while embedding it in a modern, conscious, and respectful approach, such as that taught by Seb Kinbaku.
