About Shibari and Kinbaku

Contemporary Shibari is often associated with ancient Japanese rope restraint techniques. This idea deserves clarification.

During the feudal era, Hojojutsu was a martial art used to restrain and transport prisoners. These techniques served judicial and military purposes. The rope was a tool of control. It was neither an artistic practice nor a relational approach.

Modern Shibari is not a direct continuation of this martial art. It emerged in the early 20th century when Japanese artists, notably Ito Seiu , reinterpreted ancient tying techniques within an aesthetic and visual framework. The rope then became a medium of artistic expression.

In the 1950s–1960s, figures such as Nureki Chimuo contributed to the development of modern Kinbaku. The term Kinbaku literally means “tight binding” and specifically refers to the Japanese artistic and erotic rope practice. The word Shibari , more generic in meaning, simply means “to tie” and has become the internationally used term for this art.

It is important to clearly distinguish:

Hojojutsu → a martial restraint technique

Kinbaku / Shibari → an artistic and relational practice based on consent

Today, Shibari is a living art practiced worldwide. Contemporary approaches integrate essential principles of safety, communication, and responsibility.

La Boutique du Shibari aligns with this vision: offering carefully selected equipment in service of a conscious, respectful, and evolving practice.
